Elinka

Eleanora Derenkowsky was born to Mari Fiedler Derenkowsky and Dr. Solomon Derenkowsky in Kiev, Ukraine, on April 29, 1917, the year of the Russian Revolution. In 1922, the family left te Soviet Union for the United States sttling first in Adams, New York, then in Syracuse. By 1928, the father had been naturalized and the family name was offically shortened to Deren. Her mother named her Eleanora after the Italian actress of the period, Eleanora Duse. At home, she was "Elinka".
